6 Tips To Help You Fall Asleep

Regularly I find myself laying in my bed staring at the roof because my ADHD brain won't settle down or I just generally have a lot to think about. Because of this I find I take hours to fall asleep, which isn't very good when you have work the next day. Over the years I have learnt tricks to help me fall asleep easier.

Interact with your pets.

I have noticed that getting out of bed and spending a few minutes interacting with my pets helps a lot if I have a lot on my mind, as it allows me to focus on something I love. If you do not own any pets, you could always try doing something that you enjoy.

Use your five senses.

I learnt this one from my phycologist, which I found to work for me well. Take a moment to ask yourself these five questions:

  1. What is something you can hear?

  2. What is something you can feel?

  3. What is something you can smell?

  4. What is something you can see?

  5. What is something you can taste?

Doing this will allow you to focus on naming these things. This is very helpful if you have a lot on your mind.

Have a warm shower before bed.

This may not work for everyone as sometimes having a shower wakes them up. However, having a warm shower may help some people relax so they can fall asleep easier. This may be more effective for some rather than washing your face with warm water.

Wash your face with warm water.

Some people find that washing their face with warm walk cloth helps them relax. This may be more effective for some rather than having a shower.

Count to 100

By counting to 100, this will allow you to focus on counting rather than what is keeping you awake. Some people may find it more effective if they count to 200. It really depends on you, so I recommend you experiment with this.

Avoid using your electronics.

For some people this is needed. For others, they can fall asleep even after using their phone. It honestly just depends on your situation. Allow at least 30 minutes before bed to be electronic free. If you have things to do before bed, l find doing this is quite easy. For example, each night I need to have a shower, and feed all of my pets (I have a lot), which means it can easily take me half an hour to do so. This also allows me to take my mind off anything that may be causing anxiety.

If you are 16 or over and these tips do not work for you, I recommend you read my other post for sleeping troubles "Can't Sleep?".
